I am a big fan of King. She inspires me as an author and it doesn’t hurt that she writes in my genre. I have read three of her books with two on my to-be-read pile and I am constantly coming back for more.
Regarding the plot of this story, I was initially very intrigued by the idea of it. I had so many doubts about who was the killer and what their motive was but having read hundreds of books in the genre, I quickly figure out who the killer was which was a bit of a buzzkill for me. I would have loved a more ironclad twist. With all that said though, if this is your first go at Crime Fiction, get ready to be surprised. King set everything up nicely, I just so happened to have a wildly speculative mind!
My favorite character was actually Lane’s secretary, Nadia. I love the characters with lots of common sense and those who support others. I did like Ethan Lane but he had a few moments of “what are you thinking” that made me scratch my head. I think the idea behind some of his common sense lapses was that King was trying to make Ali so irresistible that Lane couldn’t think straight with her. I found that a little improbable considering the circumstances.
I loved the world of the book. Ali was quite the jet setter so we got to see many different locales and explore travel with her. That was fun. I also really liked Lane’s office. I don’t know why but it reminded me of every struggling P.I’s office and I just felt comfy there. Plus some of the funniest scenes took place in that office!
The themes of trust and deceit were pretty heavy in this book but I have to admit that I didn’t see the payoff of those themes with the ending. It felt a little rushed and I think there could have been one more chapter to tie up the twist ending. It truly felt like there was a chapter pulled from the book at a pivotal moment.
Regarding the narration, I wasn’t a huge fan. The vocal range of the male characters was pretty stale, but I listened and paid attention so I understood which character it was more because of the story, less because of the narration.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I would recommend it to someone who wants to start reading crime fiction and may want a little steam to go with that. This book has a lot of steam. I think King is a pro at that.
