I read Once Upon a Lane by Wilson not long ago and the stories offered on his Patreon membership exemplify his writing style, brilliant plotting and imagination. Additionally, Wilson never takes a break from teaching us important life lessons in the most exquisite way. His eloquent writing style is perfect for these affecting and often emotional stories. It definitely took everything in me to keep tears from falling during a few of the stories.

One Day to Live

This is a well written novella that slaps us in the face with the truth of our lives. He calls the setting in this story a self created prison and although he places it in a neat narrative with sci-fi tones, when you read this, you will understand what Wilson is doing. You’ll be uncomfortable and motivated all at the same time. Open your mind to what he’s telling you here.

Wilson writes this story with one main character, who is also a shut in, and that character is basically the only one we interact with throughout the story, but Wilson does an excellent job of making the setting of the story feel full despite being alone with this character for so much of the story.

Then of course, there is the lesson! If you had 24 hours to live what would you do? If you knew when you would die how would you react? Good for the readers, Wilson doesn’t just want to get existential on us. We are well entertained by the hidden and miraculous secrets that often pepper Wilson’s work and keep them very interesting.

Overall, I think the best thing about this story is the way Wilson sends us through a long range of emotions. From joy, and pride, to confusion and shock, rounded off with fear and then the relief of understanding, there are a lot of things to unpack after reading this story. I was very entertained and happy with this story and I see what Wilson is trying to tell me. Read and find out!
